Iam often asked what is the difference between stress, anxiety and depression. So I thought it would be a good idea to share my perspective. Over the next 3 weeks I will post in turn: Stress, Anxiety and Depression.
Stress is part of our primal “fight or flight” response. Simply put it’s intention is to keep us alive. It is part of our everyday lives and a normal reaction to a situation where you feel under pressure. Whilst we no longer need to outrun animals that are trying to kill us, our reaction to modern stressful situations does create similar feelings and chemical reactions in our mind and body.
Modern stressors could include, problems at work eg tight deadline/toxic environments, or public speaking, sitting exams, worry over loved ones etc. Sometimes the stressor comes from an internal source eg our own over active imagination/negative self talk, or an external source, eg coping with people who annoy us or being stuck in traffic.
We don’t have the actual fight or flight to release the chemicals, and not everyone has been taught that is ok to express yourself (in a healthy way). Over time if not released in an appropriate way the chemicals build up creating an imbalance which can lead to chronic disease.
Stress is our response to a threat or a situation.
3 quick tips:
- find an outlet – go for a walk, exercise, listen or play music
- meditate or do some deep breathing
- limit alcohol, sugar consumption and processed foods
Be kind to you, you are the only you there is!
